Inventory, records, aftermarket parts, procurement – Muratec’s Stephanie Harris has worked in a variety of support departments during her 32 years with the company.

She’s handled machine drawings, parts orders, engineering changes, sending spare parts to customers, and purchasing items that keep Muratec running smoothly.

It’s given her a better appreciation of how all the departments come together to make Muratec the success it is today.

“To see all the ins and outs,” she said, “it helps understand the whole process.”

Stephanie is now a purchasing coordinator for the machine tools division. In celebration of her long tenure with Muratec, she recently sat down for a Q&A session.

What drew you to Muratec and what has kept you here?

My previous employer shut down. I had been out of work for about 3 weeks and was bored out of my mind.  In my search for employment, I discovered Murata. I had never heard of this company before but at this point I just wanted to work. When I received the job offer, I was overly excited. My manager at the time, Dave Rohr, loves to tell the story that at the end of our phone conversation, I failed to hang up and he heard me screaming with excitement.

The company was new to the Charlotte area, and many of us who started there became family. Our families grew together. The children that we had throughout the years are now adults with their own families. Many are now proud grandparents. There are several that have retired but still keep in touch. You not only have a closeness with your co-workers but your customers as well.  You develop a rapport with each of them throughout the years.  It’s a true blessing and a joy.

How has technology and your industry or department evolved during your time at Muratec?

Technology has certainly evolved over the years. The variety of CNC machines that are currently available to meet the needs of many companies. The improvement in how we operate and the ability to assist customers promptly.

What has been your work philosophy or motto?

Keep learning, be a team player. Be willing to help customers to the best of your ability.  Stay positive and take advantage of all opportunities that become available.

Share a memorable experience or project that had a lasting impact on you.

Working on the Centrum 2000 project – all departments working together to build this machine here in Charlotte, NC (Muratec’s North American headquarters). When you have that togetherness, a project of that magnitude is most certain to succeed because of the teamwork involved.

What advice would you give someone just starting out at Muratec?

This is a great company to work for, from the friendliness of the employees to the vast array of nationalities/cultures.  There are many activities throughout the year that encourage everyone to let loose and have fun.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions – everyone’s willing to help you.
